The Temptations Review Featuring Dennis Edwards Continues Motown Legacy

The Temptations Review featuring Dennis Edwards is one of the most famous Motown acts of all time. The original group The Temptations began singing together in 1961 with some of the best vocalists in the music industry. They were one of the first and most successful crossover groups in music, reaching across age, gender, and race barriers.

The group was unique since there wasn't a lead singer with backups who sang harmony. They all sang lead and harmonies. The group was originally known as the Elgins. When they signed with Motown, they released their first big hit “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” followed by their first #1 hit “My Girl.”

Dennis Edwards who is from Fairfield, Alabama, began his singing career at the church where his father was the pastor. Fellow members of the original band Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams are also from Fairfield. The Edwards family eventually moved to Detroit where Dennis sang in the church, where again his dad served as pastor.

His professional career in music began when he was in his teens. Dennis started singing with a gospel group known as the Crowns of Joy, and later studied at the Detroit Conservatory of Music. His dream was a career in rhythm and blues. He formed a soul-jazz band called Dennis Edwards & the Firebirds after leaving the gospel group. Dennis joined the group the Contours, who opened for the Temptations, where he met lead singer David Ruffin.

Dennis joined the group in 1968 and replaced lead singer Ruffin, where he remained for the next nine years. He sang lead on Temptations hits including "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," "Cloud Nine," "Ball of Confusion," and "I Can't Get Next to You." Dennis sang on and off with the band for a number of years, and had a solo career in the 1980s. The band had a continuous line of 5 exceptional vocalists with the focus on an ensemble rather than a single lead singer.

Dennis left the Temptations permanently in 1983 and formed his own group known as The Temptations Review featuring Dennis Edwards. He's made guest appearances on Johnny Carson, BET, Motown's 25th Anniversary, Oprah Winfrey, Midnight Special, and Solid Gold.

    Dennis Edwards's accomplishments include:

      • 14 Gold Albums
      • 5 Grammy Awards
    • Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame Inductee
    • 38 Billboard Top 40 hits

“Get Ready,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “Losing You.” “Cloud Nine,” “Just My Imagination," “Ball Of Confusion,” “Runaway Child,” "Psychedelic Shack” and “My Girl” are just a few of the songs that have made it to the top of the charts for Dennis Edwards. They have amassed more than 30 #1 songs and top ten hits.

Dennis Edwards's unique sound came from focusing on songs about relationships, politics, and social change that their audience had a connection to. The music he performs has transcended many generations, and he's one of the most influential and popular singers in the music industry.
